Scarlet figured this out and we just had to share!

Think easy gift bags, lunch bags, grocery bags, any bags!
All with perfect squared off bottoms and 2 seams!

Take a piece of rectangular fabric. Mine is a random scrap. Size will depend on how tall and wide you want the finished bag + the size of the bottom and sides.

SBT1
Press fabric.

SBT2
Fold Wrong Sides together and Press

SBT3
Fold one side past the fold leaving 1/2 the width you want for the bottom.

SBT4
Flip and fold 2nd side back to match the 1st.

SBT5 & 6
Sew up the sides.

SBT7
Now you have a little bag.
Turn it right side out.

SB8 & 9
Fiddle with the bottom just a bit and you get ...

Now hem and add handles/closures of your choice.

Enjoy.

Thanks Jenn, looks great! I'm making mine now! I cut out a double width (ok by accident) and am cutting it in half after ironing the fold.

I took a bag class once and we learned to sew the bottom of the bag that way. It came out looking quite neat, but was easy to do, lol.

oh that is easy!!

I'm planning to make ds and dd new library bags for the summer reading program and I like this style better than what I had in mind.

I'll have to make some extras for their bestest friends too.

thanks for sharing girls :)

This looks really simple!
I do have a question though- how do you figure out the size it is going to be?
TIA!

Good question.

I just finished a "playdate" with my sister and her kids so I'm less clear than normal. (our playdates include wine)

Figure the side of your gift + the depth divide by 2 + seam allowance + some of give.

Clear as mud... I'm sure.

This looks great! I need a "lunch bag" for my husbands lunch for work every day and this might be perfect. :)Anyone have ideas on how to harden the bottom of the bag so that when putting various tupperwear and drinks and stuff in it that it stays flat when sitting on a surface?
