I made these without the leg elastic as knit shorts for ds and cousins. They were very quick and comfy.

"Beach" Jersey Shorts - #6 otto 3/08

Extended the rise here to. My dd always grows out of the rise first! Omitted leg elastic as well because I wanted they more like short. Very comfy!
