The snaps make the shirt much easier to put over ds's head though I think I would rather just make a crew neck shirt. Flatlocking the armhole seams was not a good idea as there were too many layers for the seam to lay flat.

I adapted this one to have an open placket at only one shoulder:

I did this one with snaps at both shoulders, and wasn't super pleased with the way the binding lay.
